Introduction. This study examines how a protected natural area affects tourism development in adjacent mountain settlements. The research focuses on the spatial and functional links between protected - area entrance points, tourism routes, local infrastructure, and settlement - level tourism activity. The study addresses the need to assess not only the conservation status of a territory, but also the real mechanisms through which it influences nearby communities, service development, visitor flows, and recreational pressure. Methods. The research was based on a combined field and desk - based approach. Mountain settlements located at different distances from the protected area and its equipped entrance points were compared using spatial, infrastructure, recreational, and socio - economic indicators. Field surveys included the registration of tourism facilities, accommodation and food service points, marked routes, navigation elements, road accessibility, trail condition, and signs of recreational degradation. The collected data were normalized and integrated into a tourism development index, while correlation and regression analysis were used to determine the contribution of individual factors. Results. The results showed that tourism development is determined not by formal proximity to the protected - area boundary alone, but mainly by travel time to equipped entrance points, the availability of marked routes, accommodation facilities, and information infrastructure. Settlements in the nearest influence zone demonstrated the highest level of tourism development, with an average of 14.6 tourism facilities per settlement and an integral tourism development index of about 0.69. More distant settlements had lower values, while some deviations were explained by road quality, route intersections, and local attractions. On the most visited routes, tourist density reached 18-24 persons per kilometer, and 34- 42% of trail sections showed signs of degradation. Conclusions. The study shows that protected natural areas can act as important drivers of tourism development in mountain settlements, but this effect is not automatic. It depends on transport accessibility, route organization, local service capacity, and management of recreational pressure. Sustainable tourism development in adjacent mountain settlements requires better connection with protected - area entrance points, improvement of small - scale tourism infrastructure, distribution of visitor flows, and regular monitoring of trail conditions.
