(NO, NO2,… NOx). Introduction. Continuous environmental monitoring of open - pit mining operations remains challenging because conventional stationary and remote sensing systems cannot simultaneously provide high spatial resolution, real - time data acquisition, and economically feasible deployment over large areas. This study investigates the application of Smart Dust technology as a distributed sensor network for monitoring airborne particulate matter and hazardous gaseous emissions in mining enterprises located in mountainous regions. Particular attention is paid to assessing the information reliability of the sensor network under harsh environmental conditions, where mechanical damage, adverse weather, and communication failures significantly affect network performance. Methods. The proposed approach combines the development of a heterogeneous Smart Dust architecture with simulation - based evaluation of network degradation. Several deployment scenarios were analyzed using centrifugal dispersal and unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) - based delivery under different wind conditions (2, 5, and 8 m/s). The simulations considered sensor failures caused by mechanical impacts, aggressive environmental exposure, communication topology changes, energy limitations, and data replication mechanisms. The analysis included network connectivity, sensor survivability, data preservation efficiency, and information reliability throughout the operational life cycle. Results. The simulation results demonstrate that information reliability strongly depends on deployment strategy and meteorological conditions. Centrifugal dispersal provides high initial spatial coverage and redundancy under weak and moderate wind conditions but rapidly loses effectiveness as wind intensity increases. UAV deployment enables precise placement of sensor clusters and improves network stability in critical monitoring areas, although it cannot provide complete spatial coverage because of payload limitations. A critical connectivity threshold was identified, below which reliable data transmission and replication become impossible. The proposed replication mechanisms significantly reduce information loss despite progressive degradation of individual sensor nodes. Conclusions. The study shows that Smart Dust technology can substantially improve environmental monitoring of mining enterprises by providing dense spatial measurements and fault - tolerant data collection. The obtained results support the use of adaptive deployment strategies combining centrifugal dispersal with UAV - assisted sensor placement depending on environmental conditions. The proposed methodology also establishes practical criteria for maintaining network functionality and provides a basis for integrating Smart Dust data into digital twins of mining operations for real - time environmental management.
