The genre dominant of narratives about Siberia is the anecdote, which comes into contact with other genre forms: the sentimental novel, the travel essay, the feuilleton, the chronicle, etc. The research material includes "Siberian anecdotes" published in Russian periodicals, recorded in memoirs and official documents, as well as works of art with an appropriate genre subtitle. The methodological basis also includes work by Yu.M. Lotman and I.P. Smirnov on the structural and semantic features of short narratives; by E.Ya. Kurganov, E.K. Nikanorova and V.I. Tyupa on the history and genre poetics of the anecdote; by J.-M. Schaeffer on the naming of genres; by E.G. Vodolazkin, E.I. Dergacheva-Skop, D.S. Likhachev, A.M. Panchenko and N.V. Ponyrko on ancient Russian literature; and by M. Agapov, I.A. Aizikova and K.V. Anisimov on the literature and history of Siberia. The focus is on the role of the anecdote in constructing the image of Siberia as a space of unpredictable events. At the first stage of the work, the constructive features of the anecdote that are of fundamental importance for short narratives about Siberia are studied and presented: the tendency to create the "reverse" side of official history, the recording of curiosities and anomalies, the ability to penetrate other genre forms, and narration on behalf of an eyewitness. Next, we consider the tradition of medieval literary monuments dedicated to the eastern periphery of Rus' and establish their connection with the works of modern times. In early narratives about Siberia, violations of the norm were noted mainly in the physical sphere; in the writings of modern times, they acquired the character of a social metaphor. An analysis of nineteenth-century sources shows that the range of curiosities and anomalies recorded in the texts was quite wide: from physiological and natural "curiosities" to administrative incidents in remote territories. The characters in Siberian anecdotes are travelers, merchants, industrialists, members of the Russian-American Company, and officials from Siberia or those sent to Siberia. The plot basis of the anecdotes in this thematic group is the unexpected or pronounced manifestation of personality qualities that are attributed to Siberian space as a place of exceptionality. In the course of the analysis, the key features of short narratives about Siberia were identified and examined using specific examples: the two-dimensional and hybrid nature of images, the increase in curiosities with spatial distance and the decrease in the number of eyewitnesses, and the grouping of texts into microcycles. It is concluded that short narratives play a significant role in creating ideas about Siberia and the changes that occur to people on its territory. The authors declare no conflicts of interests.
