Аннотация: To the attention of specialists and a wide range of readers, we offer a little-known work by Praskovya Nikolaevna Tarnovskaya, a prominent Russian scientist, which has never been republished or translated into foreign languages. The work, which was published in 1891, in its original form is now understandable only to philologists -Показать полностьюthe language has changed significantly over the past 130 years. However, its content is still of great interest both to specialists and those who are interested in the history of science, criminology and anthropology. The peculiarity of this edition is that, for the first time, the text of the work is offered in a form adapted for the perception of modern readers. The modern version of the text of the work is marked by the desire to preserve the author's assessment of scientific phenomena and all the nuances of the author's style of presentation. The proposed edition contains not only the footnotes made by P. N. Tarnovska, but also those made by the author of the adapted text, as well as by scientists-criminologists. Such auxiliary apparatus greatly facilitates the modern reader's understanding of the scientific text of the late 19th century. A unique aspect of this edition is the novel translation of this work into the English language. This provides foreign specialists and readers with an opportunity to familiarize themselves with this work of a remarkable woman scientist. The publication is intended for specialists and a wide range of readers interested in the history of Russian science, criminology and anthropology. The English translation is performed from the text of the research transposed into the modern Russian language by A. G. Khoroshavina.
