л. н. In 1982 in Yakutia geologists O. V. Grinenko and V. A. Kamaletdinov discovered the Diring-Yuryakh paleolithic settlement. For quite a number of years the settlement was studied by professor Yu. A. Mochanov. The settlement is located on a high (ancient) 105- 125 m terrace of the Lena river next to the ravine of Diring Yuryakh. Pebble artifacts of archaic look were found on the living floor where they were distributed as small size accumulations (patches). At the initial stage of the study of the settlement all the research results obtained gave a possibility to date it as pre-Pleistocene. During the period of field studies 40 thousand square metres of the living floor were excavated and over 5 thousand artifacts were found. In the process of complex studies of this archeological site an international discussion about the age of its artifacts got started. Yu. A. Mochanov suggested dating the artifacts as belonging to the period from 3.2 million years of age to the middle of Late Pleistocene.V. A. Ranov visited the Diring-Yuryakh site in 1988, together with S. M. Tseytlin andN. I. Drozdov, and determined its age within the range of 250-300 thousand years of age only on the basis of the geological-paleogeographical context of the monument. There were no data obtained by physical methods which would not allow for various interpretations of age for the living floor until 1997, with the exception of paleomagnetic dating carried out byA. V. Penkov. Aсcording to the data received by American scientists, who performed an expert test of quartz rock from Diring using the thermo luminescence method in 1997, their age is ranged between 260-370 thousand years. Thus the age of Diring-Yuryakh Paleolithic suggested in one of his versions by V. A. Ranov in 1988 in the article written together withS. M. Tseytlin was confirmed by American scientists 10 years later. Yet despite this fact the discussion about the age of Diring-Yuryakh Paleolithic still goes on.
